That is a very poetic and apt description of the beauty of film. What I found particularly compelling was Bill Evans’ quote from the “Kind of Blue” (one of my favorites as well) liner notes. It is the fact that film forces a much more delicate and intuitive relationship with the scene being photographed. While digital doesn’t necessarily destroy that (as their are amazing photographers shooting digital – Salgado!), it does nothing to promote that intimate, delicate relationship the way the more static analogue shot does. I think that is the great disadvantage of digital. In the end though, it is the beauty of the print produced by film and a wet tray that I think is the real advantage of film. It is simply incomparable.
